Spratt applied for a patent called fleshy fibrin dog cake, which blended grains, beetroot, various vegetables, and dry, salt-free gum of Prairie beef. The biscuits were expensive to sell at the time, a pack of 50 pounds, the price is equivalent to a skilled craftsman's day's salary - but Spratt's target customer is England's homesick. In the advertisement, the large-scale layout gives the evaluation of the use of dog food by the nostalgia. One of the customers wrote: "Royal Mary is a Greyhound in my family. It was the champion of the Harlow Hunting of the Waterloo Plate last year. I trained her dog biscuits throughout the training last year."

In 1895, Spratt opened in New York, when the New York Times described the dog biscuit as the staple food for training dogs. However, the shape of the dog biscuit we saw today was proposed by Carleton Ellis in 1907.

After the Second World War, dog biscuits gradually evolved from dog staple food to dog snacks, which added fat and high calories. “More and more Americans are becoming wealthy consumers, and dogs benefit from it,” said historian Katherine C. Grier, author of Pets in the United States.
